Roads around here don't fail from the top. Water works its way underneath, the clay swells up and shrinks back down, and what started as a hairline crack turns into full base failure. So street maintenance in Baton Rouge goes a lot better as a plan than as a panic phone call in July.
Gulfline Paving runs ongoing maintenance programs, which means repairs happen on a schedule instead of whenever somebody complains loud enough. Private jobs get built to Louisiana DOTD grade standards, same as public work, and our commercial list includes FedEx, Academy Sports, Regions Bank and the Louisiana National Guard. A program means dates, scopes and dollar figures you can actually put in a budget. Not a one time patch and a handshake in the parking lot. Most Baton Rouge street maintenance agreements we write include some mix of this:
If the property needs more than surface work, take a look at everything under our road contractor services.

Boards can't vote on a vague idea. They need a scope on paper. Phased plans let a neighborhood stretch the work across two or three budget cycles, and we'll schedule around the school drop off rush so nobody's blocked in.
Public jobs get documented from start to finish. DOTD grade materials, compaction targets hit and recorded, real traffic control with proper signage and flaggers.
Loaded trailers beat up pavement fast, especially at dock aprons and tight turning radii along the Airline Hwy corridor. Nights and weekends usually work best there. Freight keeps moving that way.
Cold patch gets you a few weeks. Full depth repair gets you years. You'll get a straight answer from us on which one your street actually needs. Skipping the base check? That's the number one reason potholes keep coming back in the same spot. Water sitting under that pavement will pop a fresh patch right back out by the next wet stretch. Step 1. Mark the failed area, then saw cut clean square edges
Step 2. Pull out the broken asphalt down to sound base
Step 3. Check that subgrade for moisture and soft spots
Step 4. Bring in stone base and compact it if the clay underneath let go
Step 5. Lay hot mix in lifts, rolling each one
Step 6. Seal the joint so water stays out

Water gets in through cracks. Nowhere else, really. Seal them while they're small and you push resurfacing out by years, but leave them through one Gulf summer and a hurricane season and those edges spall out into potholes.
Our crews rout the crack first, blow it out with compressed air, then fill it with hot pour rubberized sealant. Cool dry weather is the sweet spot, so a lot of Baton Rouge crack sealing gets booked for late fall and winter windows.

There's a point where patching stops keeping up and you're just throwing money at it. Resurfacing makes more sense then. Mill off the worn surface, fix whatever base failures show up, lay a new asphalt course, restripe.
| Pavement Condition | Best Move | Typical Life Gained |
|---|---|---|
| Scattered cracks, sound base | Crack sealing | 2 to 4 years |
| Isolated potholes, good surface | Full depth patching | 3 to 6 years |
| Widespread cracking, worn surface | Mill and overlay | 10 to 15 years |
| Base failure across the road | Full reconstruction | 20 plus years |

Sixty plus inches of rain a year fall on Baton Rouge, and the clay under everything holds onto it. Pavement sitting in water won't last. Doesn't matter how good the mix was.
Slope, inlets, curb flow lines, shoulders. All of that gets looked at before we quote any surface work. Regrading a shoulder or clearing out a plugged inlet sometimes solves the whole thing, and it runs a fraction of what another round of patching costs.
From the Baton Rouge shop, street maintenance and road repair work goes out across the Capital Region:
